Kent County Bookmobile

The Kent County Bookmobile is a mobile unit offering free library service to Kent County residents since 1988. "Lucy," the new bookmobile, went into service in April 2004. The staff explores opportunities to reach patrons at new locations. Therefore, the schedule may be subject to change. In some cases, the bookmobile may be at a new site at the same location. To verify where the bookmobile will be, please call 698-6440 or visit the Library at 497 South Red Haven Lane (between Route 10 and Woodside on Route 13).

How "Lucy" the Bookmobile Came to be Named

Did you know that the Kent County Bookmobile is called "Lucy"?  It isn't a name picked at random or because it sounded "cute."  Lucy is named in memory of a real person: Lucy Urban.

Lucy Urban and her brother Walter lived on a small farm outside of Hartly.  Lucy had two loves: cats and books.  Every other week, Lucy and her brother both came to the bookmobile to pick out books.  They loved to visit the bookmobile and looked forward to the visit.  In 2003, the Kent County Public Library received a letter from a lawyer's office informing the library that Lucy Urban had passed away.  The surprise was that the SPCA and Kent County Public Library each received money from her estate.

Thanks to Lucy Urban's generosity, the library started a builing fund for a new library.  It seemed only fitting to name the bookmobile for her.  Via the bookmobile, Lucy's legacy still travels throughout the County giving pleasure to other residents of Kent County.
